Sunday 18th February – Lent 1

Dear Cherished Congregation of St. Nick’s Kingsway,

This week, as we dive into Mark 1:9-15, we accompany Jesus from His baptism to the wilderness, witnessing the Spirit’s descent and His subsequent trial. It’s a journey of affirmation and challenge, much like attempting to navigate our local supermarket aisles under the latest social distancing measures – you know you’re on the right path, but that doesn’t make it any less perplexing!

In our current times, marked by both global challenges and the search for the remote control, we are reminded of the resilience and faith that guided Jesus. As we face our own wilderness of endless news cycles and the quest for a decent internet connection, let’s remember the promise of new beginnings and the constant presence of God’s guiding spirit.

May this passage encourage us to embrace our own trials and triumphs with grace and a good dose of humour. After all, if Jesus could endure 40 days in the desert, surely, we can manage a 40-minute wait in any queue, armed with patience and perhaps a thermos of tea.

In fellowship and with a chuckle,

Augustine
